Mod Review: Reign Of The Old Republic
While I spend a huge amount of time doing the XML coding for the v1.34 Galactic Overhaul, I thought I'd try out a new mod for the original Battlefront II for fun.
I had a real craving for Knights Of The Old Republic the other day and thought I’d search ModDB to find some old but reasonably good Knights Of The Old Republic (KOTOR) era mod for Battlefront II that I could play for nostalgia… only to find a BRAND NEW mod for the KOTOR period released that very day!
So I’ve been playing some ‘Reign Of The Old Republic’ and I thought I’d do something new here, and write a review. If this is something readers enjoy I might do more of this.
About The Mod
The mod is part of the Expanded Conflicts project for Battlefront II, and comes with two eras: the Jedi Civil War from KOTOR, and the Great Galactic War of the MMO game.
I don’t know the MMO content too well, apart from the amazing trailers, so I generally stuck to the Jedi Civil War. All of the units you’d expect were here, with a wide variety of classes for all factions and era, and some excellent heroes too, from Darth Revan to Satele Shan.
The art quality is really high for all of the assets, and the gameplay is very enjoyable.
It doesn’t include space yet, but if you’re desperate for space combat in KOTOR era you can check out the Battlefront 1 conversion mod which has some good maps. On that note I’m excited to play Revan’s Revenge when that comes out from the EAWX team. I think it will be the only other mod for Empire At War that I make time to play other than Age Of Legends.
Hunting The Sith On Naboo
It sometimes happened in Battlefront 2 that you would be the last member of your team alive. I was playing as this hardy Ithorian Jedi Knight and realised I was the last man standing after a tough match on Theed, Naboo.
I had to start hiding in spots throughout the city, moving through the night, hunting the Sith soldiers, and then vanishing without a trace. Outnumbered 20 to 1, I had to be careful and cautious, only striking against isolated men or small groups.
One by one, I recaptured command posts, slipping away before the Sith forces could respond. Incredibly, my Ithorian managed to take down half of the Sith troopers, and defeated two deadly Dark Jedi warriors in single combat! These were hair-raising moments given how deadly enemy Force users are in Battlefront II.
I finally found the last Sith, 10 of them, all clustered together, with two lightsaber-wielding Dark Jedi, and a turret. There was no way I could engage them all just with a lightsaber… and then I spotted turret. I sprinted across the courtyard, grabbed it, and mowed down the enemy squad. They fired a rocket back, missed, and then the surviving Dark Jedi leapt into the air to attack. I shot him down mid jump and Naboo was saved!
Review
The mod looks great, the gameplay is fun - it’s not too easy (as OG Battlefront 2 sometimes could be), and there is a really nice variety of authentic KOTOR-era unit classes and heroes. It’s also compatible with a variety of popular community-made maps, including the Battlefront conversion project. Overall, I strongly recommend! Grab the mod here.
