Dev Diary #47: We're back - and you don't want to miss this bumper edition!

I’m resurrecting the popular Dev Diary format, with this post covering loads of different areas of mod development.

If you enjoy playing the mod, remember, none of this would be possible without paid newsletter subscribers. I’m trying to reach 100 paid subscribers this year and you can sign-up here to support the project.

Contents of this week’s post:

  • The new Trade Federation terror weapons coming in the next release

  • New squadron formations!

  • Two BRAND NEW ships - courtesy of the amazing Spy Lake Walker

  • You will finally get access to these existing ships as BUILDABLE units - for the first time!

  • Legacy of 4-LOM: the deadly reprogrammed droids coming to this Hutt crime family

The new Trade Federation terror weapons coming in the next release:

The T4 Turret Droid is a hulking behemoth from the time of the Battle of Naboo, built by the Colicoid Creation Nest who designed the Droideka.. It’s only appearance in lore was in the classic game Jedi Power Battles, and they were known to be highly customisable. In Age of Legends they will be the Qunaalac Kajidic’s major heavy assault vehicle. (Model credit: Kubli.)

You can see in that video another brand new unit, the LR-57 Combat Droid. (Model credit: Philloraptor.) These smaller walkers are similar in role to AT-STs, scouting ahead of larger walkers to engage infantry and light vehicles. They are highly effective in this screening role.

New squadron formations!

One of my major inspirations for the mod’s space combat and general feel is X-wing Alliance. You can see this already in unique features like civilian space traffic in orbit above most planets, and in the Escape Pod and Survivor System where destroyed ships have a chance to spawn escape pods or ejector seats for small craft.

Keep an eye out next time you have a big space battle and you’ll see tiny little ejector seats with pilots escaping from the combat zone!

In the current public build most squadrons use the same, generic formation. But thanks to a free release from Vulcanus I’m now adding a range of canonical and WW2-inspired squadron formations that observant players will be able to spot.

This will bring more X-wing Alliance style visuals to the mod, and also some squadron layouts inspired by Rogue Leader - another great classic game.

Two BRAND NEW ships - courtesy of the amazing Spy Lake Walker

The current development cycle is jam-packed with new units, art assets and other content. Today I’m pleased to present two new ships from Spy Lake Walker.

One is a nifty (not so) little corvette, based on the CR-90’s spaceframe. The CR-98 Command Corvette is designed to lead hunting packs of corvettes, offering a FOW reveal boost, and a ‘concentrate fire’ ability that amplifies the damage output of corvettes for a brief time.

Fans of Howard Day’s work will recognise this next design. I’m calling it the HD-17 Cutter, and it’s designed with forward-firing weaponry to cut swathes through customs patrols or enemy fighter squadrons. It’s an effective smuggler craft and escort vessel, but it has to be used correctly and it is easily outflanked.

And that’s not all. Because you will also get access to these newly buildable craft…
